What are the most critical elements for working in Surface Ship HAZMAT?
Being smart is being SAFE! When working in the HMC or at work centers with hazardous materials, it is crucial to be aware and follow guidelines.
- HICSWIN or HICS 4.X will be your ship's end-use hazardous material inventory management system. Have your CHRIMP Tech provide training and conduct an over-the-shoulder practice evaluation.
- The HMM Tool shows Free Issue inventory at all FLCs. Check Free Issue at your current FLC prior to placing any requisitions. You will get it faster, and for free.
- Always check your ship's T-SHML prior to placing ANY requisition. If a material is considered hazardous (categorized as Special Material Content Code "H") and the NIIN is not listed on your ship's T-SHML, the material will be rejected. Submit an SFR (SHML Feedback Report) to NAVSUP WSS N261 to get the material added to your T-SHML. After approval, you can requisition.
- Understand the criticality of material compatibility and segregation.
- Know who your CHRIMP Tech is at your home port and at your transiting port. Check out the Afloat CHRIMP Tech POC Listing Afloat CHRIMP Tech POC Listing in this site or on the HMM Tool > Resources > Afloat Files for an up-to-date listing of CHRIMP Technicians at all FLCs.
I work in the surface ship's HMC. What should I be doing to stay aware and improve overall HMC function?
